State Champion Tree Map Guide for SW Michigan

NOTE:   this summary reflects information found in the Michigan Champion Tree List dated 02/01/96.

The Michigan Big Tree Hunt seeks to identify the largest known representative - or "Champion" - tree of its species.

There are 37 State Champion Trees for the thirteen county region of SW Michigan. Of these, 15 are in the National Register of Big Trees. Ten of the 37 champions are noted in the State Listing of Champion Trees as an "exotic or planted species".

Kalamazoo County leads the count with eight champion trees. No entries were located for Eaton and St. Joseph Counties.

Champion tree entry differences between the on-line version of the National Register of Big Trees and the on-line version of the Michigan Champion Tree State List:

  1. Black CHERRY in Allegan - tree noted in State List is located in Washtenaw; record measurement and entry data differ from the National Register Allegan entry.
  2. Crack WILLOW in Berrien - noted as national winner in State List; not noted in National Register
  3. Green ASH in Cass - record measurement and entry data differ between State List and National Register.
  4. Common HOPTREE in Kent County - noted in State List, but not as a national champion; noted in National Register
