The Ancient Latvian Time-Reckoning System

1  Solar   Year   =   1   "Gads"

1  Gads   =   8   "Laiki"   [months]   +   d10T   [day 10 total]

1  Laiks   =   5   "Savaites"   [weeks]

1  Savaite   =   9   "Dienas"   [days]

9 x 5 = 45   "dienas"   in   a   "laiks"

45 x 8 = 360   "dienas"   in   8   "laiki"

Notes:

d10T   [day 10 total]   =   d10Z   ["Ziemassv\etki"]   +   d10L   ["Lieldienas"]

The solar year is not a constant integer.   Some "Sv\etku dienas", or festival days, are additional days added between the standard 45 day "laiki".   These extra days celebrate the winter solstice ("Ziemassv\etki") and spring equinox ("Lieldienas"). The measurement of time for these festivities fall outside the 5-week/9-day pattern and can be represented in terms of two variables:

d10Z   ["Ziemassv\etki"]   ...   3   "dienas"
between "Ledus" & "Ziemas Laiks"

d10L   ["Lieldienas"]   ...   2-3   "dienas"
between "S\ersnu" & "Pavasa\ra Laiks"

These two variables are integral measurements of time which function to maintain balance in the ancient Latvian time-reckoning system. Combined, they absorb observed variations in relative constants, and maintain integrity of the 9-day system.

Implications:   if you are born on a Tuesday, your birthday will *always* be on a Tuesday.

(45 x 8) + [5 or 6] = 365 or 366
  [("dienas" x "laiki") + "d10T" = 1 "gads"]

  1   "Gads"   =   1   Solar   Year   =   360   "Dienas"   [days]   +   d10T   [day 10 total]

The ancient Latvians relied on a "solar calendar" as the basis for their time-keeping system.   Solar calendars describe the cycle of the seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring ... Astronomers refer to this seasonal cycle as the tropical year. It is measured at precisely 365.24+ days long, This time period is gradually getting shorter by about half a second per century. [Squaring the Circle]

The "Tropical Year", is defined as the mean interval between vernal equinoxes.
equation for the "mean tropical year" based on a "fictitious mean sun" ...
365.2421896698 - 0.00000615359 T - 7.29E-10 T^2 + 2.64E-10 T^3 [days] where T = (JD - 2451545.0)/36525 and JD is the Julian day number.

NOTE :
Astronomical cycles are not absolutely constant; they change with time. To perfectly sychronize a calendar year of an integral number of days to the tropical year, it is necessary to introduce a variable which compensates for this difference - "leap time". Only a purely observational calendar can maintain synchrony with astronomical phenomena over the long-term course of events. [http://astro.nmsu.edu/~lhuber/leaphist.html]
