BOOK REVIEW ...
... cover picture Drawing upon journals, newspapers, and oral accounts 19th century Schoolcraft comes alive in the chronology of a small Michigan community. From the arrival of the first settlers in November of 1828, the area was settled largely by cultured, educated New Englanders and Virginians. Villagers enjoyed such a rich and varied life including musical societies, debating clubs, lyceums, a female seminary, ladies library, and church congregations that at mid-century Schoolcraft had been called the "Little Boston of the West". Concern for the larger community was evidenced by the number of village men who served in the state legislature and the fact that during the era of the Abolishionist movement a station on the Underground Railroad was located in the village. Joys, heartaches, struggles, and successes are related in this book which is a tribute to the strength and resilience of the residents of this Michigan village and the surrounding prairie.
